Submission Guidelines


The primary aim of Critical Stages/Scènes critiques is to provide an outlet for critical writing that contributes to cutting-edge, international discourse on the theatre.


We welcome articles of varying subject matter and approach as outlined in the journal’s Call for Papers.


We publish in June and December (with deadlines on April 30 and October 30).


Abstracts

We publish articles (not interviews or reviews) with an abstract, not longer than 200 words, in the alternate language. Where possible, please send your article in English with an abstract in French; if this is not possible, send your abstract in English and we will have it translated. Likewise, if possible, please send your article in French with an abstract in English; if this is not possible, send the abstract in French and we will have it translated.



Attachments

Please submit your article to your Section Editor and to the Editor-in-Chief as an e-mail attachment, double-spaced in MS Word. Articles will typically range from 1500 to 3500 words (10,000 to 20,000 characters including spaces); please check with the Section Editor if the length is not specified in the Call for Papers.


Permissions

Permission to reprint articles is granted with the requirement to include “First published in Critical Stages,” along with other citation information and the web address of the journal.


Photos

Photos (JPEG) and other types of illustrations are encouraged. A photo of a performance needs to include: title of the performance; names of the playwright (if there is one), director, company, venue, actors (clockwise from top left); date of the première; photo credits. All necessary permissions for images should be provided. These can be in the form of an e-mail from the company, or documentation that you have procured the images from an official website. Note: If the performance the author attended is other than the opening night, please include mention of the actual date in the text itself. General information regarding the production, however, should match the date recorded in national and international databases.


Publication History

CS/SC publishes writings that have not been previously published. However, in an exceptional case, a published work may be considered.


Separate Files

A separate file should contain a cover letter with author’s name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, and professional affiliation. Only the article title should appear at the head of the article file. The author’s name and/or institution should not appear in the article file.
